BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN JAZZ PERFORMANCE

Learn the Language of Jazz

Unique – Immerse yourself in jazz language

Of 468 jazz courses on offer world-wide (Downbeat Jazz Education Guide, 2011 – 2012; Jazz Times Jazz Education Guide, 2011 – 2012), Jazz Music Institute (JMI) is one of 27 music institutions world-wide that offers a degree strictly dedicated to jazz performance.  We believe that if you become fluent in the language of jazz, you can play any genre of music.

Creative – Go beyond the boundaries of the music written on the page

An exclusive institute, JMI teaches all elements of jazz in a holistic way.  We place a high emphasis on improvisation and developing strong aural and anlaysis ability in students.  As well as composition skills, we teach students band leadership skills and instill in them the capacity to be strong contributing members of an ensemble.  We produce well-rounded musicians.

Practical – Learn music in a ‘hands-on’ performance based course

Students spend the majority of contact hours in performance based classes, giving them the opportunity to learn and refine playing skills in different areas.

The three year full-time degree is divided into three study areas:  Performance, Core Studies and Creative Studies.

Students undertake:

  • Principal Study (individual lessons with instrumental teacher)
  • Contemporary Performance Practice (weekly student performances)
  • Improvisation Techniques and small group jazz ensembles

These subjects are supported by the theoretical subjects:

  • Jazz Materials (music theory)
  • Aural and Analysis (listening and transcription skills)
  • Jazz in Context (jazz history)

Students have the opportunity to learn a significant amount of jazz repertoire in both the practical and theory subjects, equipping them with the ability to analyze form, structure, harmony, melody and rhythm from different perspectives.

Other subjects include Presentation Skills and Business Studies.  Presentation Skills is divided into Performance Skills, Vocal Ensemble and Transcription and Analysis.  In the core subject Business Studies, students learn the marketing, financial and advertising avenues required to sustain a career in the music industry.
