JMI Youth Program

JMI’s Youth Program is designed for current high school students who love music and are looking to further their musical development with like-minded peers. This program is the perfect preparation for students looking to study music after high school or for young musicians that just want to keep developing.

The program is delivered in an 8-week term for 2 hours on Saturday afternoons delivered by some of JMI’s esteemed faculty. Classes are held in small groups of up to 9 students within a fun and supportive learning environment.

These classes are open to all instrumentalists, drummers and vocalists.

Classes are held on Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm at JMI’s campus in Bowen Hills for 8-week terms.

The next term dates are:

• Term 4 2025 – 18th October to 6th December 2025
• Term 1 2026 – 7th February to 28th March 2026
• Term 2 2026 – 2nd May to 20th June 2026
• Term 3 2026 – 25th July to 12th September 2026
• Term 4 2026 – 17th October to 5th December 2026

What do you learn in the Youth Program?

In this program, students will learn about:

• Standard jazz repertoire
• Fundamentals of jazz harmony
• Techniques for improvising
• Developing transcription skills
• Small jazz ensemble performance skills

Classes are very practical with students spending the majority of the time playing on their instrument.

Classes will be spent learning jazz repertoire, techniques for how to improvise over the repertoire, how to arrange the repertoire for small ensembles and transcribing previous recorded versions of the repertoire.

Depending on the number of attendees, classes will be split in terms of ages and abilities.

The JMI Youth Program costs $462 (incl. GST) per term in 2025.

You can choose to pay the entire program upfront, or the following payment options:

• 8 x $57.50 weekly payments
• 4 x $115.50 fortnightly payments
• 2 x $231 monthly payments

Payment plans can be selected when you complete the online registration form.

Fees for 2026 will increase to $484 incl. GST per term
