About Vince Jones Quintet
Vince needs no introduction to any music-lover, celebrated for the beauty of his signature voice, there is no one like Vince Jones in concert or in person, the man has a quiet charisma that has you spellbound! He has to be the world’s most laid-back singer, relaxed, cool and unhurried, confident in his own musical style, he sings like there’s nothing to prove; his mellifluous tone filling the lyrics with his obvious joy of the music.
Nicknamed – Australia’s National Treasure, for over 5 decades Vince has carved out a singular space in our musical landscape, blending cool jazz, soul and sophisticated song writing with a lyrical honesty that speaks straight to the heart. From his breakthrough in the early 80s, to creating the highest-selling Oz Jazz album to date ‘Come in Spinner’ (from the ABC TV Series) to his enduring presence on festival stages and concert halls here and overseas, Jones has remained true to an artistic vision that’s as politically conscious as it is musically rich.
Celebrating 50 Years of songwriting, storytelling touring his original music, Vince is recognised as one of the country’s most influential Jazz artists captivating audiences with his deeply expressive vocals and spirited Flugelhorn playing, he doesn’t just interpret songs he inhabits them! With 25 albums to boot, a repertoire including beloved originals such as – ‘Trustworthy Little Sweethearts’ ‘Nature of Power’ ‘Rainbow Cake’, and fresh takes on Jazz standards, he continues to inspire generations of musicians and listeners alike. His voice and spirit as vibrant as the first day he hit the stage.
Frequently invited by Australian Music Conservatoriums to mentor up and coming music students in Jazz, Voice and Songwriting, a cause he is passionate about, culminating in live concerts at the Cons showcasing the students’ talents to the public. Vince enjoys working with and fostering students in his own touring shows (outside of Cons), offering many pearls of wisdom from his long-esteemed career.
As a man who thinks deeply about the state of the world, his passion for social consciousness shines through in his lyrics and life. Never shy about sharing his views on the human condition, world affairs and the environment, his astute thought provoking observations have you walking away inspired … you take home something to think about! “I watch people’s faces; and sometimes it looks like strange things are happening in their souls when they listen.” – VJ
Born in Glasgow, Vince and family came to live in Australia at 11 years old. Growing up in Wollongong NSW, listening to his Horn-playing father and singing Mothers’ collection of great jazz albums, the feel, style and essence of the music became a natural part of Vince’s world. Starting his journey at 20 as a bebop trumpeter playing the club circuit in Melbourne in the late 70’s and early 80’s, the young man had no idea that in just a few years his superb voice would touch the hearts and minds of many. He was drawn to R&B music-a genre in which the emotive force of the voice is matched by technical and improvising skills. To a young guy steeped in creativity and blessed with a sweet golden voice – it was natural to meld these together – so began the evolution of one of Australia’s great vocalists. An Artist at the Top of His Game, Vince continues to set the benchmark for Australian Jazz!
