From Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Brown, Sheila Jordan and Harvie S and Helen Merrill and Ron Carter, the voice and bass duo has always held a special place in Jazz. Intimate, exposed and full of possibility it demands deep listening, trust and creativity.
Join acclaimed jazz vocalist Hetty Kate, who has performed worldwide from intimate jazz clubs to expansive Concert Halls, for a masterclass dedicated to this unique format. Together with bassist Thierry Fossemalle she explore how singers can approach duo performance; choosing repertoire, shaping phrasing and space and communicating clearly with your musical partner.
Open to jazz vocalists (and curious bassists) of all levels, this masterclass offers a rare chance to learn from a seasoned international performer and step into one of jazz’s most rewarding settings. This session will combine demonstration and discussion, followed by the opportunity for a few participants to sing and receive some feedback. Whether you choose to sing or observe you’ll gain practical insight into making the most of the intimate voice/bass format.
