JMI Jazz Orchestra is proud to continue our series of concerts featuring classic big band albums performed live from cover to cover, allowing our orchestra members to deep dive into the style and repertoire of important bands. Once again we will be turning to the book of Count Basie, this time studying Basie’s first collaboration with composer Sammy Nestico from 1968’s “Basie Straight Ahead”. Nestico had been introduced to Basie the previous year and this album set the stage for a fruitful 10 albums-worth of collaborations between these 2 legends over the following 17 years.
Previous projects is this concert series have been Count Basie’s “Atomic Basie” (2024) and “Kansas City Suite” (2025), as well as Duke Ellington’s “New Orleans Suite” (2025). The JMI Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece big band made of up of students from the Jazz Music Institute led by Josh Hatcher.
The JMI Jazz Orchestra performs regularly around South East Queensland at a variety of venues and festivals.
Join us for an open jam session after the set to celebrate International Jazz Day!
