ABOUT THAD JONES

Thad Jones, one of the great creators of jazz music – improviser, composer, arranger. Born on March 28, 1923 in Michigan, into a family that included siblings Hank and Elvin, both of whom also had long and influential careers as jazz musicians. Thad played the trumpet primarily, but became known as a composer and arranger, creating inspired and eternal music for the Count Basie Orchestra, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra who performed, and are still performing every Monday night at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Thad later led the Danish Radio Orchestra, now recognised as one the world’s greatest large jazz ensembles. Thad Jones died on August 20, 1986. This performance will celebrate one hundred years since Thad Jones birth, and will feature swinging versions of his original compositions, and some of his large ensemble arrangement ideas pared down for the quintet format. The music will be presented by five of Brisbane’s finest musicians. A show not to be missed!
