JMI and US jazz organisation Jazz at Lincoln Center, directed by Wynton Marsalis, are excited to announce that the 2017 Essentially Ellington Down Under Regional Festival will be coming to all capital cities of mainland Australia in August 2017!
Essentially Ellington is a completely FREE program designed by Jazz at Lincoln Center to make Duke Ellington’s music accessible to as many high school musicians as possible and to support the development of their schools’ music programs. The Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program provides:
- FREE music and resources to high school jazz bands.
- Download charts, videos and other resource materials
- Access to a revolutionary interactive video featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra rehearsing each chart, courtesy of Tutti Dynamics, Inc.
- Online recordings, videos, and rehearsal guides

The Essentially Ellington Down Under Regional Festival is a high school big band festival that will be adjudicated by two Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians. Each ensemble that enters will receive a recording of their performance with audio feedback from the adjudicators. In addition to this, each ensemble will receive a private workshop with a Jazz at Lincoln Center clinician immediately after their performance.
The Essentially Ellington Down Under Regional Festival will be followed by a full-day PD workshop lead by the Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians that will focus on pedagogical techniques for teaching jazz music to young students. This is a fantastic PD workshop that we have run for the last few years and feedback received from these workshops is always very positive. Most attendees state that it is the best PD workshop they have attended.
