JMI is committed to providing the jazz community with the highest level of jazz education, including open workshops to the public. These workshops vary in timing and cost.
JMI open jazz workshops are available to the public and feature some of the finest jazz musicians and educators in Australia and internationally.

John Harkins - piano - Sydney

In this workshop, Sydney-based and US born pianist John Harkins will reveal, in depth, his approach to practicing a song. This will include his approach to rhythm, melody and harmony.

John will choose a Duke Ellington tune to demonstrate this process.

Pianist John Harkins moved to Australia in 1994 from Chicago, Illinois. He has played/recorded with Warren Vache, Scott Hamilton, Frank D’Rone, Jackie Allen, Barbara Morrison, Kurt Elling, John Pizzarelli, Cleo Laine, Danielle Gaha, Darren Percival, Emma Pask, Don Burrows, James Morrison, Charles McPherson, Eric Alexander, Ben Monder, Dennis Erwin, Harold Ashby, Jackie Williams, Terrell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Andrew Speight, Mark Murphy, Dale Barlow, Don Burrows, and Bernie McGann.

But mostly, he’s had the great pleasure of playing jazz with his long time trio mates, Brendan Clarke and Andrew Dickeson. Together, they’ve recorded Stay Right With It, The JazzType, and most recently, Cognition.

Julien Wilson - saxophone - Melbourne

Julien is a Melbourne saxophonist who studied improvisation at the VCA in the early 90s under Brian Brown and Barry Duggan. After graduating in 1994 he made the first of many trips to the USA and won the National Jazz Award at Wangaratta Jazz Festival.

He is the recipient of the Freedman Jazz Fellowship, an APRA Art Music Award and a handful of Australian Jazz “Bell” Awards including Australian Jazz Artist of the Year. Between 1999-2001 he studied in the USA at New England Conservatory with Paul Bley and George Russell. His long-standing trio has been praised as “one of the most original groups in Australia” (John Shand – Jazz – The Australian Accent)

Known for his work with bands such as Ishish, SNAG, Assumptions, TheBlackArmBand and the AAO, Julien’s playing on sax and clarinets is featured on award-winning albums by Jonathan Zwartz, Barney McAll, Stu Hunter, Sam Anning, Andrea Keller, Kristin Berardi & Ben Salter. In 2013 he founded Lionsharecords. The label’s debut release This Is Always was the first album to receive a Bell Award Trifecta.

He has recorded or performed with international artists including Kurt Elling, Charlie Haden, Hermeto Pascoal, Jim Black & James Carter. Julien currently teaches jazz and improvisation at Monash and Melbourne University.
