About the Workshop:
Looking to audition for JMI’s Bachelor or Diploma programs in 2024? Are you feeling nervous or anxious about the audition process? Not sure what to work on to prepare for the audition or whether you’re at the right level to get into the course?
Don’t fear! JMI is offering free audition workshops with our staff and students to help you to prepare for your audition. This is a great opportunity to get a taste of what it’s like to learn jazz at JMI. The workshops will be delivered in a friendly group environment. You’ll also be able to get a tour of our campus and facilities and meet some of JMI’s staff, current students and graduates.
After attending the workshop, you’ll come away knowing what to practice to improve your playing and have a few mysteries about jazz debunked!
Workshop topics:
Working on Improvisation
- Using scales and chord tones to improvise through chord changes
- Developing rhythmical phrasing ideas
- Introducing chromaticism
Learning Repertoire & Listening Examples
- Playing the blues form
- Understanding the melody and harmony for standard repertoire
- Significant recordings and listening examples
Developing Theory Knowledge & Aural Skills
- Understanding harmony and how it applies to songs
- How chord symbols apply to scales
- How to practice identifying intervals and chords
