ABOUT JMI JAZZ ORCHESTRA
The JMI Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece big band composed of JMI’s talented students and alumni that will be performing a free 3-concert series in Alexandria Park, situated within the RNA Showgrounds. The second concert will focus on the great Count Basie who, like Duke Ellington, was a central figure in the development of jazz music over an extraordinary career. The Count Basie Orchestra is an institution that is central to jazz music. The band was started in 1935 and is still active today. The JMI Jazz Orchestra will perform key compositions and arrangements by the Count Basie Orchestra, exploring the reasons why the band was so important to the history of music and how it is still relevant today, almost 90 years after its original inception.
