ABOUT DENSON BAARTZ QUARTET

Australian alto saxophonist Martha Baartz and Canadian/Australian pianist Louise Denson are the beating heart of the Denson Baartz Quartet. Both women are prominent performers/composers with a string of credits to their names, and they have joined forces to present their original compositions in this exciting and musical ensemble. The quartet is completed by Brisbane’s top call rhythm section: Helen Russell (double bass) and Aaron Jansz (drums). The compositions are based on beautiful, inspirational stories and range in style from tango, bolero and ballad, to fast swing and samba.

DBQ came together in 2016, and their first CD, Dark Sky, was recorded at the 2017 Brisbane International Jazz Festival. Tracks are receiving airplay on jazz radio across Australia, with the title track winning the 2019 North Coast Entertainment Industry Dolphin Award for best jazz composition. They have performed in Melbourne, Brisbane and northern NSW to enthusiastic audiences.

Each member of the group is well-established in their own right. Martha Baartz has performed extensively at renowned Australian jazz venues and many national and international festivals including the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, the world famous Glastonbury Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. Martha is most well known for her compositions performed in the Baartz Freeman Sextet and Baartzy’s Brew. She has recorded three successful albums and her music is often played on Radio National, Jazz Track. She has performed with Australian jazz greats such as Sandy Evans, Bob Sedergreen (2008 Don Banks award winner), Andrea Keller (Aria winner), and Michelle Nicole (Wangaratta Jazz vocal award winner), and Renee Geyer, Dan Sultan and the Black Arm Band on the commercial scene, among others. She expresses a tremendous depth of talent for writing, demonstrated over the years leading various successful bands.

“A creative, innovative sound…hooks the listener.4/5” (Chris Copas, The Star)

“From hard-driving funk to evocative ballad, from blues to Latin to tango … fastidious and edgy but playful and fun too … full of emotion … “
(Leon Gettler, The Age ‘Green Guide’)

Louise Denson is a pianist, composer/arranger and educator. She holds a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the Queensland Conservatorium (Brisbane) where she is a Senior Lecturer in Jazz Studies. She completed her Masters in Jazz at New England Conservatory (Boston), studying with such luminaries as Paul Bley, George Russell, Bevan Manson and Joe Maneri. She has issued six CDs, three through labels and three independently. Colours of Your Love (2018, with Ingrid James and Wild Silk Strings Project) has received acclaim from around the world, and Dark Sky (2019, Denson Baartz Quartet) is currently receiving airplay across Australia. Denson is an Associate Artist with the Australian Music Centre and was a finalist in the 2018 Australian Women in Music Awards (Educator category).

Denson’s unique approach to music emphasises melody and rich, contemporary harmony. Her extended tenures in Afro-Cuban and Dominican dance orchestras in Montreal resulted in a frequent ‘Latin’ flavour in her compositions. CD Clean Start won a Queensland Sunnie Award (jazz category), and her composition ‘Time to Be’ (Denson/James) received a Queensland Music Award (Best Jazz Composition). Numerous compositions have been finalists or highly commended in the Queensland Music Awards, including ‘All I Know’ (Denson/Hoyt), recorded by Bell Award-winning vocalist, Elly Hoyt. ‘Hear Me’ was commissioned by Elly Hoyt for her new CD, The Composers’ Voice (2019).

Denson has performed at the Wimbledon International Music Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, Valley Jazz Festival, Brisbane Jazz Festival, Broadbeach Jazz Festival and many others.
