Two of Brisbane’s most original musical minds, Andrew Garton and Louise Denson team up to present an evening of the unexpected! But you can expect clever and beautiful melodies, great solos, great grooves, high energy and excellent musicianship from these two improviser/composers. They’ll be joined by Helen Russell on bass and Aaron Jansz on the kit.
Louise Denson is a pianist, composer/arranger and senior lecturer in jazz studies at the Queensland Conservatorium. She has released six CDs of original compositions and arrangements. On the Level (1996) featured four prominent Montreal musicians and the New York-based drummer Gary Fieldman. Clean Start (2002) won the 2003 Queensland Sunnie Award for Best Jazz Recording, and featured celebrated Australian horn players Tony Hobbs, John Hoffman and Phil Noy. Portrait (2007) was a collaboration with Sunnie Award-winning vocalist Ingrid James. Flame Tree (2010) contains ten Afro-Cuban and Brazilian-themed compositions. Colours of Your Love (2018) with Ingrid James, was nominated for both a Bell Award and an AMC/APRA Art Music Award. Her most recent project, Dark Sky (2019), is a joint project with alto sax player Martha Baartz, also featuring Helen and Aaron.
Andrew Garton is a prominent Brisbane saxophone and clarinet player and composer. He has composed extensively for his own group, the Abbreviations Orchestra, and has composed/arranged music for jazz big bands including the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra, Mace Francis Orchestra (Chinese Whispers III project) and Brisbane Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. Commissions include a suite for jazz orchestra for EMO (2009), and an extended work for the Abbreviations Orchestra, premiered as part of the Q150 celebrations and the 2009 Valley Jazz Festival, from Jazz Queensland.In addition to his own projects, Andrew performs regularly with The Holy Rollercoasters, The Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra, The Francis Wolves, The Pantheon of Swing and many other projects around town.
